Catching up with Pueblo, Colorado punk vet Matt “Pickle” Hamilton

Dying Scene sat down with Matt Hamilton (aka Pickle) to go over his extensive involvement in the punk rock scene. Matt has been actively playing drums for quite a few years and lots of bands, which includes Produkt, S.O.S., the Coffin Boys, the Worms, the Intercourse Pickles, Trash Idols, Blanket of M, and Slash City Daggers. Hes also been a roadie for Eleventh Hour and Whole Chaos and currently plays drums for Diskount Vodka and the Dead Stop.

Dying Scene: So Matt, tell me about by yourself. Who are you? Wherever are you from? When did you get into punk rock? When did you come to a decision to come to be a drummer and why?

P: My title is Matt Hamilton. Everyone calls me Pickle. I play drums. I began playing…well, I bought into punk rock when I was about 15 yrs old. I didn’t get started enjoying drums til I was 17 and I’ve been enjoying punk rock at any time considering that, for 30 in addition decades. Ive performed in tons of distinct bands by way of the yrs but right now, I’m participating in in Diskount Vodka and the Useless Close in Pueblo, Colorado. But I’m initially from from East Texas.

DS: Why did you choose to develop into a drummer?

P: Mainly because I skateboarded from the summertime of fifth quality all the way til the commencing of 10th grade and I messed up my knee and I necessary to do anything so I did not eliminate my intellect. So, I started out taking part in drums and all my good friends ended up musicians. So, I bought a pal of mine named Kevin Fender (Eleventh Hour, Employer Worker, AUNTIE) to demonstrate me a minimal tempo and I crafted off of that. Below I am, to this working day, it is the only lesson than I ever experienced. I also played with tons of people today by means of my lifetime but finally just got my life again with each other. So, now I’m basically earning a dent in society, I think a little little bit. So, which is very good.

DS: So, what other bands have been you in?

P: Let’s see, way back in the working day, I was in a band named The Coffin Boys. I was in band known as Blanket of M, the Worms, and I was in a true large band in Arizona identified as The Slash Town Daggers. We went around the world with that. It was like a trashy, glammy, punk rock and roll band. It was fun. You could obtain that stuff on-line. I sat in and performed drums with Jeff Dahl and Freddy Lynxx at a stay demonstrate again in the mid or late 90s again in Arizona. That was quite badass.

DS: That is a large amount to be proud of for guaranteed.

P: Yeah, unquestionably.

DS: So, what introduced you to Pueblo, Colorado?

P: I necessary to get off of drugs and I had buddies right here and could smoke all the weed I wanted to. So, right here I am and I bought a little little bit appropriate-minded all over again and began craving drums. So, my previous roommate employed to converse about this dude at the plasma heart who played guitar named Carlos. So, I went and uncovered him and in this article I am actively playing new music eight decades later on with him in the Dead Stop.

DS: You’re at the moment in Diskount Vodka and the Useless Close. How would you explain your bands? And, how do you control your time in both of those bands?

P: Diskount Vodka is just straight up aged faculty punk rock. Some of it kind of seems like street punk, a tiny Oi-ish, sort of poppy…just a very little little bit all over the position. We have a break up seven inch with Tv set Tragedy coming out on January 13th on Break up Character Information out of Las Vegas. Which is a entertaining one particular and Diskount retains releasing singles. February, we’ll release an album. Then as much as the Useless Finish goes, we are a psychobilly band with punk rock influences. Im a punk rock drummer but I participate in a little little bit of rock and roll in that band, also. So, a minimal bit all above the area also as well. Hopefully we have some new audio coming out quickly, way too.

DS: Interesting. So, what are you up to right now?

P: Just finding prepared to launch more content with each bands, but Diskount Vodka for certain. We have new substance coming. So, we also have a video that arrived out on December 1st, a very little dwell video with a song that we’re about to launch.

DS: So, with your two bands, have you achieved what you sought out to do as a drummer?

P: I’ve created objectives and hit individuals targets but now I have new aims. So, I’m just likely to preserve relocating up the ladder. In no way quit. It will take eternally to get anyplace being a musician, for some motive, but it is worth it.

The Dead End (remaining to right) Pickle, LJ, and Carlos.

DS: Who are your most important influence and inspirations? Notify me about your patches on your jacket.

P: As considerably as my greatest influences, of system the Ramones affected me participating in drums at a young age. But right here just lately, Scott Churilla (Reverend Horton Heat, Supersuckers) who performed with Three Poor Jacks, that dude was super inspiring to observe. So, I’d say that gave me a small little bit of inspiration in my lifetime to beef up my drums some. I like listening to a bunch of Oi bands. They are quite inspiring. Rancid often conjures up me. I like all types of types of music, so I pay attention to psychobilly new music, way too. I like The Meteors, The Peabrains, The Quaranteds, and Rezurex. There’s a bunch of superior bands like that. I like every thing from the New York Dolls to Johnny Thunders, all forms of things.

DS: So, you have been accomplishing domestically and touring regionally for years now. What is the greatest present you have performed? And, what is the most effective demonstrate you have performed? Tell me about the most unforgettable clearly show you have played.

P: The most important demonstrate I’ve played is Hot Rod Rock & Rumble due to the fact there were hundreds of people today in entrance of us and then 1000’s of persons in the complete position that heard us. So, it was fairly wild. As significantly as unforgettable shows, I could go all the way again to when I lived in Arizona and played exhibits with David Gardner with the Trash Idols and people displays were being pretty unforgettable. Participating in with Jeff Dahl was one thing that was super nuts in my life span. Raymond Burton Estes (…And We All Die) advised me to buy a Jeff Dahl tape at Camelot New music in the mall for a buck. So, I did and I fell in really like with it. Several years afterwards, I bought to play drums with him on stage and played his tunes. I was tremendous impressed. But he’s also recorded things for the Trash Idols and recorded stuff for Slash Metropolis Daggers also as a result of the many years for me. So that was really awesome. I nevertheless continue to keep in contact with the person. He’s great. So, substantially inspiration arrives from him, far too.

DS: So, what would you say your proudest times are?

P: My entire job. I like it all. It is hardly ever been a uninteresting minute, that is for positive. Actively playing with the Unwanted fat Skins. They are a definitely great Oi band and individuals men are seriously great fellas. So, Ive performed with a good deal of very good bands.

DS: What information do you have for younger musicians who want to get started a band?

P: You don’t want to perform music. Really don’t ever perform an instrument! No, I’m just kidding. I do not know…just understand that instrument and feel it. If you do not feel it, surely do not enjoy it. Just hold shifting forward. Youve received to put in the work. You just can’t just sit there and assume any person to occur give it to you. Youve bought to go do it.

DS: So, what’s following for you? What are some of the plans you have for 2024?

P: Just put out as a great deal tunes as I possibly can and probably tour some and who is aware of, shoot some films for the two bands. So, just do as a great deal as I possibly can. I only dwell after.

DS: What bands are you listening to this week?

P: Rancid, Descendents, Conservative Armed forces Impression, and a small little bit of the Hellbound Hitmen, as well.

DS: So, do you have anything at all else you preferred say to Dying Scenes readers?

P: Examine out all the bands. Test out Dying Scene and just preserve this heading. Keep an eye out for the latest releases. Thank you for performing this for us.

DS: Thank you. Many thanks for having the time to sit with us.
